Beijing gets first snow after meteorologists seed clouds...

BEIJING: Beijingers woke up Sunday morning to a city turned white with snow that came far ahead of the winter. It was only in the later part of the day that one learnt that 186 doses of silver iodide went into persuading the clouds to release snow flakes.

Amazing.... it has been a non-stop torrential downpour for the last 3 hours!! All our roads here are flooded and my wipers couldn't even keep up.. I didn't see anything on the radar earlier, then it just developed... crazy weather.

Hi I am a bit confused with remote sensing. Are these images passive or active? I was thinking passive because doesn't it measure IR objects? I am so lost. Also in figure 18-4 (2nd link) the dark spots on mexico is that caused by more IR energy?
